North Street Re-Construction – Courthouse Project
Notification #2 June 11, 2008
GENERAL
The City of Salem and the Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) in keeping
the public notified of construction milestones related to the new Courthouse Project are
providing an update on the construction status.
The project limits for the traffic improvement work includes:
North Street from the Bridge Street overpass to Essex Street;
The West Ramp from North Street to Bridge Street;
A portion of Bridge Street from the East Ramps to the West Ramps, and
The infields of both the East and West Ramps.
The traffic improvement work in these areas will be completed on or about Nov. 1,
2008. Work areas will shift as needed on a day to day basis to complete the project.
The Contractor has been scheduling work and limiting the size of work zones where
possible to minimize disruption. This area continues to be active construction zone
with times when traffic lanes and/or sidewalks may be reduced in size and number or
closed as needed to safely complete the work. The contractor will avoid reducing
traffic lanes in size or number during the peak traffic periods. Pedestrians should
follow any temporary pedestrian pathways that are identified during construction.
It is still recommended to all that alternate routes be used to avoid this area if
possible. When traveling through the area please exercise caution, reduce speeds,
and be aware of the construction work around you.
JUNE/JULY 2008
For the months of June and July work efforts will continue on the West Ramp, Bridge
Street, and North Street in the area of the new traffic signals, median work and
widening of the West Ramp.
CHANGE IN TRAFFIC PATTERNS
Be aware that on or about JULY 7, 2008 the new traffic signals will be operational,
traffic patterns will change, and the East Ramp between Bridge Street and North
Street will be permanently closed.
Initially these will be temporary traffic signals to support the project schedule. The
temporary signals will operate in a similar manner as the permanent signals. In
Sept/Oct. these will be replaced with the permanent ornamental traffic signal poles.
