North Street Re-Construction - Courthouse Project
North Street Re-Construction - Courthouse Project
Notification #1 April 15, 2008

General
The City of Salem is working with the Division of Capital Asset Management (DCAM) to keep the public notified of major construction milestones related to the new Courthouse Project.  Updates like this one will be provided at various times as the traffic improvements are advanced.

The overall project limits for the traffic improvement work includes:
            North Street from the Bridge Street overpass to Essex Street;
            The West Ramp from North Street to Bridge Street;
           A portion of Bridge Street from the intersection of the East Ramps to the intersection of the West Ramps;
            The infields of both the East and West Ramps.

The traffic improvement work in these areas will begin on or about April 22nd, 2008, and continue until completion on or about November 1st, 2008.  Work will shift within the project limits as needed on a day to day basis to complete the project.

The Contractor will schedule work and limit the size of work zones where possible to minimize disruption to vehicle and pedestrian traffic.  This will be an active construction zone and there will be times when traffic lanes and/or sidewalks may be reduced in size and number or closed as needed to safely complete the work.  The contractor will avoid reducing traffic lanes in size or number during the morning or evening peak traffic periods.  Pedestrians should be aware of, and follow any temporary pedestrian pathways that may be identified during construction.

It is recommended to all that alternate routes be used to avoid this area if possible.  When traveling through the area please exercise caution, reduce speeds, and be aware of the construction work around you.

APRIL/MAY 2008
For the months of April and May work efforts will focus on Bridge Street, and North Street in the area of the West Ramp, as well as the West Ramp.  Saw cutting of the existing pavement, relocating the curb lines, modifying storm drainage structures, widening the West Ramp towards the infield, reconfiguring the island on the West Ramp at North Street, modifying the island in North Street at the West Ramp, and starting installation of traffic signal equipment, will occur.

The contact person for questions about the North Street work is
